Process Art

This week, we had so much fun creating wooden exploration boards with our families! The joy was in the process. Every end result was different – a reflection of the choices, creativity, and collaboration of each child and grown up! The process was child led, and the results were so different. It was so fun to hear children exclaim, “Look at how cheerful my work is!”

In early childhood, process art is a powerful, meaningful way for young children to explore their creativity, emotions, and emerging skills. Unlike product-focused art—where all children might make the same craft with a clear end goal—process art emphasizes the experience of creating rather than the final result.

So why does this matter?

  • Process art supports brain development. As children experiment with materials—smearing paint, cutting paper, or molding clay—they engage in sensory exploration and develop fine motor coordination. They make decisions, solve problems, and build critical thinking skills, all while expressing themselves in unique, personal ways.
  • Process art nurtures emotional well-being. With no “right” or “wrong” outcome, children gain confidence in their abilities. They learn that their ideas have value, which fosters independence and a positive self-image. There’s freedom in knowing the mess is part of the magic.
  • Process art encourages communication and connection. Children talk about their choices, share materials, and discuss what they’re creating. These social interactions lay the foundation for collaboration and language development.

In a world where outcomes often take the spotlight, process art reminds us to slow down and celebrate the creativity unfolding in the moment. We keep our questions open-ended and our comments non-judgmental. You might hear:

  • Tell me about what you are working on…
  • How did you make this?
  • Why did you decide to…?
  • I notice….
  • I wonder…
  • How does it feel?
  • What do you think?

Children lead the way. And along the way, they develop leadership skills like project initiation, follow through, attention regulation, and collaboration…and find so much joy in the process!
